Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa?

Yes, this is the most important thing to sort for Sri Lanka. Most nationalities need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before flying. Apply at eta.gov.lk it takes about 10 minutes online, costs roughly USD 35–50 and is usually approved within 24h. Don’t leave it to the last minute; our WhatsApp group sends a reminder.

Most of our guests arrive on their own, and the camp is built around that: shared breakfasts, small group lessons, family-style dinners and rooftop sunsets. There’s a 6-bed female-only dorm that’s especially popular with women travelling solo, and a WhatsApp group before you arrive so you know faces on day one.

You don’t need to be a strong swimmer for a beginner lesson. We stay in shallow water with your instructor beside you the whole time. You just need to feel comfortable being near the ocean, there’s no pressure at all.

Neither. There’s no upper age limit and no minimum fitness level. Warm water and a gentle wave make Sri Lanka one of the easiest places to learn at any age. Just mention any limitations or health conditions when booking or in the pre-arrival WhatsApp group.

No dangerous sharks, Kabalana is a calm, safe beach break and our instructors have surfed it for years without incident. Sea urchins exist on the reef breaks, so your instructor briefs you on each spot and reef shoes are an option. We have first aid on site; anything serious goes to Galle hospital (~30 min).

Comprehensive travel insurance covering surfing is strongly recommended. Hepatitis A and Typhoid are strongly recommended, and routine vaccines should be up to date, talk to your doctor or travel clinic 4–6 weeks before you fly.

Reef-safe high-SPF sunscreen (the UV here is extreme) and mosquito repellent, local quality is unreliable. Also a UK Type G (3-pin) plug adapter, since Sri Lanka doesn’t use European plugs.

We move. If the main spot isn’t working we hop in tuk-tuks and go to one of the other breaks along the south coast, there’s almost always somewhere working. Lessons are only cancelled in genuinely dangerous conditions, and we run an alternative activity instead, so you never simply lose a session.

Camps run Saturday to Saturday, with check-in from 3PM and check-out by 10AM. Arrive early and you can drop your luggage and join the group until your room is ready. The Flexible Package can start any day, minimum 3 nights.

Free cancellation up to 7 days after your booking date, and free rebooking up to 14 days before arrival. Full terms here.
